How I handle your information

Who is responsible for your information

What I collect, and when

Whenever anyone visits. Like any website, this one is served by a host — Netlify — which keeps ordinary access logs: the IP address of the visiting device, the pages requested, and the date and time. I never use these to identify anyone. They exist so that the site stays up and secure, and Netlify keeps them only as long as it needs to for that purpose.

If you use the contact form. Your name, email address, organisation, the topic you select and whatever you write in the message. I need these to reply to you sensibly.

If you email or call me directly. Whatever you choose to tell me, plus the ordinary record of the correspondence itself.

I do not ask for any special category information, and I would rather you did not send commercially sensitive material through a web form.

Why I hold it, and on what basis

I use your contact details to respond to your enquiry and, where it leads to work, to run that engagement. The lawful basis is legitimate interests — you have approached me about professional services, and replying is the obvious consequence.

If you become a client, I process your information to perform our contract. And I keep the business records UK tax law requires me to keep — that is a legal obligation rather than a choice.

I do not run a mailing list. If I start one it will be a separate decision with its own opt-in — using the contact form will never sign you up to anything.

Who else sees it

My email runs on Google Workspace. This site is hosted by Netlify, and messages sent through the contact form are handled by Netlify Forms, which stores them in my account and emails them to me. These suppliers process your information on my instructions and for no purpose of their own.

I do not sell your information, and I do not share it with anyone else unless the law requires it.

How long I keep it

Enquiries that do not lead to work: two years, then deleted. Client records: seven years after the engagement ends, which is what UK tax rules expect of business records. Messages sent through the contact form are also held in my Netlify account, and I delete them on the same schedule.

How I look after it

I keep your information on password-protected, up-to-date devices and on reputable hosted services. No system is perfectly secure, and I would rather say so than promise otherwise.

If something goes wrong and your information is exposed in a way that puts you at risk, I will tell you — and report it to the Information Commissioner’s Office within 72 hours, as the law requires.

Cookies and analytics

This site sets no cookies of its own and I use no analytics — which is why you were not asked to accept anything when you arrived. If I ever add analytics I will choose a service that does not track individuals across sites, and I will update this notice before it goes live.

Where your information is held

Both of my suppliers are United States companies: Netlify, which hosts this site and handles the contact form, and Google, which runs my email. Your information may therefore be processed outside the UK, including in the United States. Both operate under data processing agreements that carry the safeguards UK data protection law requires for international transfers.

Your rights

You can ask me for a copy of what I hold about you, ask me to correct it, ask me to delete it, ask me to restrict what I do with it, or object to my holding it at all. You can also ask for it in a portable format. There is no charge, and I will respond within one month.

If you are unhappy with how I have handled your information, please tell me first — I would rather fix it. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

This site links out to a few other places. Once you follow a link you are on someone else’s site, and their privacy notice applies rather than mine.
